    031 FLOOR ASSASSINS,B.BOY KRAZY KAYZO

    1. Who are you? -I am Bboy Krazy Kayzo of the 031 Floor Assassins, Durban based Breakdancing crew.
    2. When did your journey begin? -My journey began at the age of 12. I learn't the basics of Bboying while at primary school – we started a group and kept practicing together. From then on we worked on our skills while meeting new dancers along the way. Once we got our hands on a “Battle of the Year 2000” DVD we had new inspiration and motivation to work harder and preserve. We entered what ever competitions we could to test our skills, and of course to meet new dancers and have fun along the way. Its been a journey of 13/14 years now and I have never looked back.
    3. What motivates you daily? -To achieve and be the best version of myself. I’m some what of a perfectionist, so before I get to a final stage of a new move or combo, I would have at least tried 100 different versions and variations of it. Over the years I’ve also gained a number of dance moves – which all required a certain amount of attention and practice to maintain. So every practice session I have there is always something to perfect and work on. Sometimes I enjoy just freestyling and jumping between moves and sets thus creating new transitions and ideas!
    4. Who is your inspiration? -Anything and everything. I’m constantly inspired by the world around me, I’m in complete awe of its wonder and its mystery. Every day I have something to smile about . I just sit back, watch, observe and learn. If I had to name some of my inspirational bboys to watch and learn from, they would be – Alcolil, Pluto, Bboy OK, Funt, Thesis, Neguin, Lilou, Roxrite and Flying Buddha
    5. When and where is your next performance? -At the moment I don’t have any performances set in stone, but there are some promising ventures coming up as we get closer to the holiday season. A part from that I am teaching workshops once a month at a dance studio in Pietermaritzburg (B-Rock Dance Studio) alongside crew member Bizzo. We all about growing the community and scene – Each one, Teach one.
    6. Do you see a future in Durban Dance Industry? -Yes I do, there is a large number of passionate and talented dancers in Durban, so there will definitely be a future for dance here. For me the real question is how long will it take for us to see this future take place. I feel like everyone is just waiting for something to happen or for someone to take over and start hosting events. There are a number of dance events at moment taking place but its more targeted at Dance Studio’s and not for our specified dance genres (Breakdancing, Tutting, Krumping etc), and the only way to change that is for us to start doing something about it. It doesn’t have to be about hosting the biggest or best event, but more about getting the community of dancers together. A future project of mine would be to host regular workshops/sessions for dancers to come and learn from each other while supplying a space for crews and individuals to practice and work on their craft.
    7. What are challenges or obstacles do you come across as a crew/performer(s),especially when performing around durban? -I would say the biggest challenge for us would be to all get along and work together. Communication is a big part of how well a crew can get along. This is most important when it comes down to putting a routine together for an event or normal performance. Everyone wants their ideas put forward or they want more solo’s and “stage time”. End of the day it’s not about one individual shining out from the crowd but more a group working to achieve a bigger goal. In terms of traveling, transport to and from events can cause problems – especially if it’s a late night event. When this happens we either have to orginise lifts or sometimes sleep over at one of the crew member’s homes the night before a gig, depending on the time of the event and the distance to the venue. One other factor would be the venue and audience we are performing for. Generally speaking for any kind of performer this is always some form of an obstacle. With us being Bboys there isn’t always a lot of knowledge or understanding for what we do so this can cause confusion. Sometimes the floor or space they have prepared for us to dance isn’t adequate enough or up to our standards. And generally speaking, sometimes there is nothing we can do to change it last minute, so as dancers we need to be much more flexible with our own moves and crew routines – We try send the same message in our performance while adjusting to our surroundings.
    8. Why does it seems like we have less number of dancers then before in Durban? -I feel in general the overall support structure for dance isn’t what it use to be. There aren’t as many promoters looking for dancers and the same goes for sponsors. Most head of department’s are based in Johannesburg or Cape Town, which could also be the cause for most of our local dancers have moved to those cities for work. Also studio space is very hard to find here in Durban especially for free or at low cost. We use to practice on the beachfront by the Skatepark outdoors in the hot sun as we had no alternate space to use. So in conclusion a lack of interest (sponsors), a lack of opportunity (events) and a lack of rehearsal space are all causes to why people usually give up dancing or move into the regular 9 – 5 lifestyle. Here in Durban “Dance” isn’t taken seriously or seen as a real job here which also adds to fuel to the fire.
    9. What makes Durban Dance Industry Good/Bad from other cities in SA? -I feel the Durban community feels like one big family. Durban isn’t a big place, and what I find with smaller communities is, no matter how far apart we are, we all seem to share a similar goal. We are also not afraid to work together on projects or events. Many times I’ve worked with Cabaret, Contemporary, Krumpers, Beatboxers, Mcees etc even Ballet dancers! When ever we see or each we all get happy and excited , because end of the day we are all dancers living a dancers life – which for some is only a Dream!
    10. How can we make sure that Dance/performing Art still exist and well presentable in the city of Durban? -By working and collaborating together. This will help us appreciate each other’s art more and gain some insight into it. It also shows the community that there are local talented dancers and performers. We have a voice and want to be heard. My crew 031 Floor Assassins have hosted numerous dance events and workshops in Durban. But we extend it to dance in general by welcoming other in aid of the growth and awareness dance in Durban.
    11. Is there anything you would like to share with us or with your supporters -This game of Life is full of ups and downs, being a Breakdancer I can certainly say I’ve experienced my fair share of downs! Haha If you are serious about dancing, the best thing is to link up with like-minded individuals to help you stay motivated. Work hard preserve and always do your best and remember, its all about the journey not the destination. “The elevator to success is out of order, You’ll have to take the stairs one step at a time” – Joe Girard

-Khanyisile Angeline Zondo, 20 years of age and was born and raised in Tongaat. I am a 3rd year medical student, 3rd year CAPRISA research placement, Mangwanani KZN ambassador, Miss Ballito 2015-2016, a model, dancer and motivational speaker.

        2. When did your journey begin?
-It began in 2013 towards the end of the year when I entered my very first pageant (Miss Medical School) and that's when I realized how much love I had for Modelling and decided to continue with it from that day on.

        3. What motivates you daily?
-The desire to reach out, make a difference, leave a mark and help as many people reach their goals/fulfill their dreams as possible.

        4. Who is your inspiration?

-I will be hosting a show in Tongaat on the 26th of November 2015.

        6. Do you see a future in Durban when comes to modeling?
-Yes. Durban is a place to create opportunities for yourself, this is the place to go big when it comes to modeling because there isn't much going on in that industry. So it all about finding the gaps and filling them and getting yourself recognized world wide.

        7. What are challenges or obstacles do you come across as an artist, especially in durban?
-My height is my greatest obstacle because when they scout models they look for a specific height and I'm mostly left out because I don't meet that requirement. But it's also a blessing because it encourages me to work even harder towards making my dreams come true and I get to learn a lot in the process aswell.

        8. Why does it seems like we have less number of models in Durban?
-We actually have many it just that most models in Durban mostly do photo shoots and that's it for them and maybe music videos.

        9. What makes Durban modeling Industry Good/Bad from other cities in SA?
-The lack of knowledge and this unfortunately limits them. They also do not have that much exposure, they don't network with the right people.

        10. How can we make sure that modeling still exist and well presentable in the city of Durban?
-By teaching people about this industry. Knowledge is key

        11. Is there anything you would like to share with us or with your supporters
-To anyone reading this, I would like to say that if you have a dream go out and work towards it. Nothing is impossible and the only thing standing in your way is you. Change your mind set, Think positively and go out there to show the world what you've got.

        3. What motivates you daily?
-Knowing that God has a great plan for me.

        4. Who is your inspiration?
-Firstly Jesus, He tells us all the things that are possible through Him....and by His words and the strength He gives me I can face anything everyday.

        5. When and where is your next performance?
-Our next performance is on Saturday (24/10/2015) at the Cansa Relay in Reservoir Hills.

        6. Do you see a future in Durban Dance Industry?
-Yes I do see a future, in fact I see a new revolution that we have started. Dancing to empower the youth and to lift up our Creator through it, because Dance was first Created to praise God, but then the world moved its focus. We want to bring that back, that we should be using our talent to serve the one that gave it to us in the first place.

        7. What are challenges or obstacles do you come across as a crew/performer(s),especially when performing around Durban?
-People not taking what we do seriously and thinking of it as something that's just for fun (hobbie) with no real purpose.

        8. Why does it seems like we have less number of dancers then before in Durban?
-Well I actually see it as if there's an increase in dancers. But that could be due to the fact that I wasn't exposed to other dancers in the city much before. But now I'm beginning to see them and how many there are. And I'm like where did they all come from??

        9. What makes Durban Dance Industry Good/Bad from other cities in SA?
-I Think its good because of the unity every1 has with one another. All dancers know each other here, however I do believe we need to start working a little more together.

        10. How can we make sure that Dance/performing Art still exist and well presentable in the city of Durban?
-By doing more workshops and flash-mobs!

        11. Is there anything you would like to share with us or with your supporters
-To my fellow dancers :Never forget who gave you your talent as a Dancer, Yes we have worked hard to get where we are but it is God who ultimately planted that gift in you, So thank Him for it and inspire someone else to find it too,  And to those that don't Dance....Start soon! You are missing out!

          10ACITY KZN STREET DANCER

          1. Who are you?
-I am 10ACITY, a street dancer in KZN.

          2. When did your journey begin?
-My journey began not long ago, in 2012

          3. What motivates you daily?
-My daily motivation is primarily Jesus, bringing glory to Him as well as my friends and family who are constantly supporting me.

          4. Who is your inspiration?
-Jesus once again is my inspiration, but I do also have so much respect for all the dancers around me such as BBoy DonnieD, Stabby and Verb NonHuman.

          5. When and where is your next performance?
-My next performance is a small one at school, but the dance season is starting soon so there is a lot to come up.

          6. Do you see a future in Durban Dance Industry?
-I think that this community has potential to grow as many people are trying to contribute to the art here such as Craig Bullock.

          7. What are challenges or obstacles do you come across as a crew/performer(s),especially when performing around durban?
-My biggest challenge is the lack of competitions and shows. Publicity is so scarce that a good dancer in Cape Town will be more successful than a great dancer in Durban. This is a problem that the Spar10z have noticed and are trying to change.

          8. Why does it seems like we have less number of dancers then before in Durban?
-This is probably due to people not seeing a future in dancing here. Dance is seen as a recreational activity, not a career.

          9. What makes Durban Dance Industry Good/Bad from other cities in SA?
          - As I said before, this community has little to offer those who take this way of life seriously compared to other cities.

          10. How can we make sure that Dance/performing Art still exist and well presentable in the city of Durban?
-We need to be constantly be pushing ourselves and each other to express ourselves as loud and clear as possible on our movements to show people what dance means. We should also earn the respect of those around by rejecting the bad habits that Street art is sadly associated with.

          11. Is there anything you would like to share with us or with your supporters
-Learn everything you can. Diversity in what you know means a lot. If you're a breaker, learn contemporary for balance and control. If you dance ballet, try locking just to experience a different way to express yourself. Don't be afraid to try it all.

            BREAK-DANCE BASIC TIPS

            BREAK-DANCE BASICS

            Break-Dance basic tips

Let get started, work out before practice to avoid unnecessary injuries. Work out helps with strength and stretching helps to gain flexibility,I take this as a first basic step. Be Safe!!

Read about break-dance articles, watch videos, talk to other bboys/bgirls for inspiration. Identify your strengths and weaknesses. Remember some other moves takes time,be patient on your self.
            Be Safe!!
It a must to know floor work,I find it hard to understand bboys/bgirls who are lacking on floor work. Most of bboys/bgirls are battle cats,in short they focus more on battles,(who being doper then who) which is not that much important if your wanna build a career,by that I mean a true bboy/bgirl knows when it time to battle and also knows when it time to Perform.

            Practice Everyday,appreciate your craft,love what you're doing

-as right now the future lays on the current dancers that are still pushing ...it what they do that will determine what the future of dance hold.. but it not that much promising.. coz if Lack of support and communication amongst dancers .

              7. What are challenges or obstacles do you come across as a crew/performer(s),especially when performing around durban?
-challenges we come across is trying to make a living out of dance. Coz people mistreat us dancers and offer us less then we worth.. 2ndly is support from other dancers and unity...

              8. Why does it seems like we have less number of dancers then before in Durban?
-we have less number of dancers coz most people who were dancing before they went where they see where money is rap or getting a job.. coz of the mistreatment we get out here if u get a gig.. and most competition they end up in JHB or CPT so there is not much motivation amongst durban dancers and the reality get in to people and the choose to fear life of the world and choose to live there happiness and get a life that will be understandable by every1.
